Planning an aircraft propeller overhaul: booking, records and freight

Plan the workshop input before the aircraft is grounded. What to send, how to coordinate interstate freight, and what affects the overhaul schedule.

When should I book a propeller overhaul?

As soon as you have a likely maintenance window, ask the workshop about the model and intended input date. That gives both teams time to check capability, records, parts considerations and transport. Waiting until the aircraft is grounded reduces the options for scheduling the work.

Use the current maintenance requirements applicable to the actual propeller. Manufacturer overhaul information can include both operating hours and calendar time; the relevant model and aircraft maintenance arrangements matter. Ask your maintenance organisation to confirm the due requirements rather than using a generic interval from an internet article.

The details that help the workshop plan

  • Aircraft type, registration and current location.
  • Full propeller, hub and blade model designations and serial number.
  • Hours, calendar history and available maintenance records.
  • Reason for removal, symptoms, known damage and previous work.
  • Spinner, de-ice equipment or other items proposed for the shipment.
  • Governor make and part number if component work is also required.
  • Preferred removal date and the date you need the aircraft back.

You do not need to solve the whole job before contacting us. Send the details you have, including photographs of identification plates if useful, and we’ll explain what else is needed.

How long does a propeller overhaul take?

There is no reliable single turnaround time for every propeller. The model, workshop booking, inspection findings, parts supply and agreed work determine the schedule. Ask for an expected ready-for-dispatch date for your job and when that estimate can be confirmed.

StageWhat to agree
Before removalCapability, intended scope, booking, records and the receiving workshop.
Removal and outward freightWho removes the unit, prepares it for transport, books collection and supplies the records.
Inspection and quotationWhen findings will be discussed, how additional work is approved and who can make that decision.
Work and dispatchThe agreed scope, parts availability, progress updates and expected dispatch date.
Return to the aircraftReturn freight, installation booking and the checks and documentation required before release.

Make sure the person approving work can be reached. A prompt decision on findings helps avoid an otherwise ready job waiting for authorisation.

Sending a propeller from interstate

Sigma’s propeller workshop is at Caloundra, Queensland, and supports operators across Australia. Confirm the receiving address and arrangements for your job before dispatch; other Sigma facilities handle different engine and component work.

Agree on packaging suitable for the particular unit, the carrier and handling arrangements. Confirm which accessories should travel with it, how the shipment will be identified and how records will be supplied. Ask about return packaging, freight responsibility and transit insurance as part of the quotation.

Your maintenance organisation should handle removal and preparation using the applicable instructions. A general shipping checklist is not a substitute for the propeller manufacturer’s handling requirements.

Include the governor and related work early

If the governor or CSU also needs attention, provide its model and part number with the propeller enquiry. Coordinating applicable governor and component work can help the maintenance team plan the complete aircraft input.

Also tell us about any related engine overhaul or exchange requirement. Availability and the correct configuration need to be checked before relying on an exchange to meet the schedule.

What if the aircraft is already on ground?

Call the workshop on (07) 5438 0900 with the unit details, location, issue and required date. We can check the available options and explain the next step. Urgency alone cannot establish repair scope or guarantee parts and completion timing.
